Obviously if you have your own yacht then only geography and resources limit you as to where you can sail and what you can see. If you don't have your own yacht it is possible to hire one in Koh Samui. As I mentioned in an earlier post Ang Thong Marine Park is a collection of 40 uninhabited islands with many secret beaches and coves as well sea caves and a large inland lake all worth exploring.

There are also a number of small islets around Koh Phangan, Koh Samui and Koh Tao. The most famous of which is Nang Yuan (near Koh Tao) that consists of 3 islets joined by an impressive sandbank.

The area around these many islands is rich in corals and hence in marine life. If you like scuba diving you can see many types of wrasse, parrot fish, trigger fish, sea turtles, reef sharks and the giant whale shark to name but a few species. There are also plenty of great snorkeling spots as well.

If you don’t have your own yacht and you want to go yachting in the Gulf of Thailand one of the best places to hire a boat is Saard’s Watersport Center in Bophut, Koh Samui. It is easy to find as it is right next to the ferry pier in Fisherman’s Village. It is a company with the best looking yachts and boats on the island for hire. You can either join tour groups that go to Koh Phangan (taking in Koh Ma, Thong Nai Pan, Than Sadet and Haad Rin) or the Ang Thong National Park or to Koh Tao and Nang Yuan.

The alternative is to hire a boat. All boat hires comes with captain and crew. Here is a brief list of the boats for hire:

1) Kindred Spirit is a brand new catamaran 13.1 meters in length and 9.6 meters wide. The boat has twin 27 HP engines. It can cruise at 7 knots under motor and 12 knots under sail. The boat has 3 double rooms with en-suite bathrooms. There’s also a living area. Cost is 40,000 THB for a day with captain and 1 crew member.

2) Natalie is 38 feet in length and 12 feet wide. It has two 250 HP engines and can manage 25 people for day trips. Per hour rental for Natalie is 9,000 THB.

3) Panyawan is 6.2 meters in length and 2.2 meters wide. The yacht has two 85 HP motors. Panyawan can hold 5 people. As with Natalie this is a boat for day trips. Price per hour is 5,500 THB.

4) Sting is a 40 foot Gulf Craft with a shallow bottom, extended side platforms and the latest Garmin touch screen navionics with interfaced 1 kw sounder and radar overlays. The craft has two 300 HP engines. Sting has a comfortable lounge area that can seat 13 people. There’s also a flatscreen TV and big fridge. Sting can be hired for 15,000 THB an hour. It can also be hired for day trips and trips to the Full Moon Party in Haad Rin (32,000 THB).

Saard’s Watersports Center has been operating since 2009. Click on the link in the resources section to see their website. There is also a small possibility of getting work as a captain or deckhand if you have experience. It is also a good place to start if you are on Koh Samui and you want to find out if there are any other private yachts around the island looking for crew.
